Trying Out a New Color
It's inevitable: the minute you decide to have guests over, you realize that your home needs redecorating. My husband and I have been talking about painting the bathroom for years, but it wasn't until we set the date for our annual holiday party (this Friday!) that we sprung into action.
I always advise readers to try out colors beforehand—by painting the options on the wall and looking at them for a few days, for example—but when it comes to my own home, what do I do? Pick a color off a paint chip and buy a gallon. We taped up the bathroom Saturday morning, had the first coat on by noon, and… hated it by 3pm. The spring-y green we chose looked neon in the tiny room and cast an eerie glow into the hall. Whoops.
At least the paint store is a few blocks away. We picked out a new color, a smoky blue called Rocky Mountain Sky from , and were able to get two coats up on Sunday. Lesson still not learned about trying it first, but this time we lucked out. It's a shade I've been liking a lot lately, complex but not overpowering, and I'm happy that the bright white walls have a some character.
