Jourdan Dunn: "Instagram is a toxic place"
One look at Jourdan Dunn’s Instagram page and you’d think she never has down days. Travel, fashion and her work are captured in insightful posts about her life, but she knows more than anyone that the photos we see on social media can tell a different story to what’s going on behind the scenes.
“It’s weird to think that [my followers] wouldn’t think I was going through any personal struggles, but I’m still human,” she tells me. “I think it’s a toxic place, especially when you are so wrapped up in it. People don’t know the difference between reality and Instagram and I think that’s dangerous.”
What makes Dunn so different to other models is that she mixes the glamorous events and model shots with real posts that show her difficulties with mental health, including about her battle with depression and self-doubt.
We are sat together in a Notting Hill restaurant at a dinner to celebrate her new collection with and her recent appointment at the brand's UK ambassador. Dunn is constantly on the move with a busy schedule, so I ask how she manages anxiety and depression with the pressures of her job.
“For me, I just try and make sure I take time for myself and don’t get too caught up with social media," she says.
“I make sure that I take the time out to really listen to my body and my thoughts and to make sure I’m on point, because if I’m not then I can just crash and burn.”
It’s easy to get lost in the thought of self-care being extravagant and time-consuming. But Dunn highlights how it can be as simple as taking a few minutes in the morning to focus on yourself.
