How to Download YouTube Videos to the iPad

Six Parts:

This wikiHow teaches you how to download a YouTube video for offline viewing on your iPad. Using a third-party app to download videos violates the terms of YouTube's user agreement and may also violate copyright laws, so most apps created to do so are eventually removed from the App Store. You can use Documents 6 in conjunction with a website to download YouTube movie files onto your iPad. If this process fails, you can always to download videos for offline watching in the YouTube app.

Steps

Downloading Documents 6

  1. Open theApp Store .Tap the App Store app icon, which resembles a blue box with a white "A" on it.
  2. TapSearch.It's in the bottom-right corner of the screen on most iPads, though you may need to tap a search bar in the upper-right corner of the screen instead.
  3. Tap the search bar.This is at the top of the screen.
    • If you initially tapped a search bar instead of theSearchoption, skip this step.
  4. Search for the Documents 6 app.Type indocuments 6and then tapSearchin your iPad's keyboard.
  5. Tap the "Documents by Readdle" result.It should be near the top of the results page; this app has a multicolored "D" next to it.
  6. Tap .It's to the right of the app's title.
  7. Enter your Touch ID when prompted.Doing so will prompt Documents 6 to begin downloading onto your iPad.
    • If you don't use Touch ID on your iPad, enter your Apple ID password when prompted, then tapInstall.
  8. Press the Home button.It's the round button on the face of your iPad. This will minimize the App Store app, allowing you to proceed with opening another app.

Getting a Video's Address

  1. Open YouTube.Tap the YouTube app icon, which resembles a white triangle on a red background. This will open the YouTube home page.
  2. Search for a video.Tap theSearch magnifying glass icon at the top of the screen, type in the name of a video which you want to download, and tapSearchin your iPad's keyboard.
  3. Select a video.Tap a video that you want to download onto your iPad.
  4. Tap .It's a curved arrow pointing up and to the right, located just below the video pane. A pop-up menu will appear.
  5. TapCopy link.It's near the bottom of the menu. This adds the YouTube video's address to your iPad's clipboard.
    • Do not copy anything between now and when you paste in the YouTube video's link.
  6. Press the Home button.It's the round button on the face of your iPad. Now that you have the video's address, you can proceed with downloading it via the Documents 6 app.

Downloading the Video

  1. Open Documents 6.Tap the Documents app icon, which resembles a multicolored "D" on a white background.
  2. Open the Documents 6 browser.Tap and hold the compass-shaped icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen, then swipe it to the left. Doing so will swipe over to the Documents 6 browser.
  3. Go to the SaveFrom site.Tap the address bar at the top of the screen, then type insavefrom.netand tap the blueGobutton in your iPad's keyboard.
    • SaveFrom is a website that allows you to download videos from places like YouTube, Vimeo, DailyMotion, and so on.
    • Other YouTube video conversion sites will not work with Documents.
  4. Paste in your YouTube video's address.Tap the "Enter the URL" text field near the top of the page, tap it again once your iPad's keyboard appears, and tapPastewhen it appears in the pop-up menu. You should see the YouTube address appear in the text field.
  5. TapDownload.This green button is in the middle of the page, just below the video's preview.
    • The highest available quality will be selected by default. If you need to lower the quality, first tap the downward-facing arrow to the right ofDownload, then select a different quality in the menu that appears.
  6. Tap .It's in the top-right corner of the screen. This will prompt the video to begin downloading into the "Downloads" folder of the Documents 6 app.
    • This process can take some time depending on your iPad's Wi-Fi connection.
    • You can monitor the download process by tapping the downward-facing arrow at the bottom of the screen.

Moving the Video to the Files App

  1. Open the Documents view.Tap and hold the folder-shaped icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen, then swipe it to the right side of the screen. You should see a list of folders appear.
    • If your iPad isn't running at least iOS 11, you don't have the Files app. If this is the case, you can't move the video into your iPad's Camera Roll; however, you can still view the video from within the Documents app.
  2. TapDownloads.This folder is in the middle of the Documents page. Tapping it opens a list of your downloaded files, one of which should be the video.
  3. Find your video.Look for the title and thumbnail of the video that you just downloaded.
  4. Tap .It's in the bottom-right corner of your video's thumbnail icon. Doing so will open the video's options menu.
  5. Tap .You'll find this green icon in the middle of the options menu. Tapping it opens a pop-up window at the bottom of your iPad's screen.
  6. TapSave to Files.It's a folder-shaped option at the bottom of the screen.
    • You may have to scroll right to see this option.
    • If you aren't using iOS 11, you won't have this option. If so, you can't move the video out of the Documents app.
  7. Move the video to your Files app.Tap theOn My iPadfile location, then tap a folder and tapAddin the upper-right corner of the screen.

Moving the Video to the Camera Roll

  1. Open your iPhone's Files app .Tap the Files app icon, which resembles a blue folder on a white background. This will generally open the last section of the Files app that you had open.
  2. TapBrowse.It's in the bottom-right corner of the screen. This will open the "Browse" page, which lists all of the Files app's folders, including theOn My iPadsection.
  3. Open your video's folder.TapOn My iPad, then tap the folder in which you saved the video. You should see the video here.
    • For example, if you saved it in the "Pages" folder, you'd tapOn My iPadand then tapPagesto view the video file.
  4. Select the video.Tap your downloaded video to open its page.
  5. TapSave Video.This option is at the bottom of the menu. Selecting it will save a copy of the video to your iPad's Photos app, from which point you'll be able to watch the video from there whenever you like.
    • At this point, you can delete the video from the Documents app without the video disappearing from your iPad's Photos app.

Using YouTube Red

  1. Open YouTube.Tap the YouTube app icon, which resembles a white triangle on a red background. Doing so will open the YouTube home page if you're signed in.
    • If you aren't signed in, tap the profile icon in the top-right corner of the screen, tapSIGN IN, and enter your YouTube email address and password before proceeding.
  2. Tap your Google profile picture.It's in the upper-right corner of the screen.
  3. TapGet YouTube Red.This option is near the top of the menu.
    • YouTube Red is a paid subscription service that allows you to download videos to view them offline without violating YouTube's user agreement.
  4. TapTRY IT FREE.It's a blue button on the right side of the screen.
    • A 30-day free trial is available at the beginning of the membership.
    • If you've already purchased a YouTube Red subscription before, this button will sayGET YOUTUBE REDinstead.
    • YouTube Red costs .99 per month on iPads and iPhones.
  5. Enter your Touch ID or Apple ID password.When prompted, scan your fingerprint, or enter the password that you use to log into your Apple ID account.
  6. Tap when prompted.This will return you to the main YouTube page. You should now have a YouTube Red account, which will allow you to download videos within the YouTube app and watch those videos offline.
  7. Search for a video.Tap the magnifying glass icon at the top of the screen, enter a video name or search term, and tapSearchin your iPad's keyboard. This will bring up a list of matching videos.
  8. Select a video.Tap the video that you want to download.
  9. TapDownload.It's a downward-facing arrow icon below the video window. Doing so prompts a pop-up window.
  10. Select a quality.Tap the checkbox to the right of a quality setting (e.g.,720p) in the pop-up window. This will determine the maximum quality in which you can watch your video.
  11. Tap orDOWNLOAD.This will download the video onto your iPad, at which point you'll be able to watch the video inside of the YouTube app at any time.
    • You can access the video by tappingLibrary, tappingOffline videos, and selecting your video.
